In this Issue
Bring on the blooms and the birds!
We are ready for spring in the Midwest!

I am excited about this issue’s cover story. Actually, I think I say that about every issue. But Megyn Price was a delightful interview, and I was enthralled by her down to earth sense of values and her approach to life as a TV star. Even more impressive was her passion for sending a message to teenage girls not to be taken in by the media hype—that being pencil thin is the way they should look. A lovely, wonderfully in-shape, 30-something, Megyn sends a message for young girls to learn to be happy with their bodies no matter the shape or size.

In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, Dr. Anne Phelan-Adams offers a heart rendering, personal account about this horrific sickness. Dr. Adams entitles the piece, The Story of Juan. I implore all of you to read her story and do whatever you can to intervene when you suspect that a child may be in trouble. It will require each one of us being aware of our surroundings, and watching for tell-tale signs to snuff out abuse of our nation’s children.

In the medical pieces this issue, we have a great line-up. Dr. Dennis Shavelson, a practicing podiatrist from New York, explains a very painful condition called planter fasciitis. Many people can develop this condition in one or both feet. Dr. Shavelson gives the whys, wherefores, and treatments for the inflammation. A little further up the leg, Drs. Carlos M. Rodriguez, Carlos Lavernia and J. Pieter Hommen of CA, discuss the options for knee replacements. Unfortunately, age and other issues can take a toll on our knees, and anyone of us can be faced with having to have the knees replaced. A must read for anyone who has this painful condition and is considering surgery.

Dr. Jacqueline S. Thompson offers the latest news about testing for breast cancer. Traditional testing for breast cancer has been making news. One report even stated that self-examination was not an important step in the testing process. Dr. Thompson refutes that message. By the way…speaking of Dr. Thompson…she stated in an article that she wrote for Radius in 2006 that young boys need to have the vaccination for the human papilloma virus, or HPV for short, as well as young girls. Reports are just now surfacing from television media carrying this same message. Our Radius writers are ahead of the times…offering our readers the most up-to-date information.

Do you know your cardiac risk? Dr. Seth A. Baum gives information about tests and evaluations we can receive that may give us a heads-up about potential heart problems.

On the lighter side, we have a seven-step plan to get you in shape while taking care of your joints. We also have our usual pet news, gardening tips, and news from our travel editor, Paula Loehr, who takes us away from the day-to-day grind to far away places.

Yes, it’s another winning issue, and we are glad to have you join us.

Think spring.
