When we were giving… We were on top
by Dr. Dev Anuroop Brar, MD

Last week, Cynthia and Yuni received the employees of the Month award from our company. Although we give this award every month, this time there were tears in the eyes of the two recipients and in the eyes of quite a few of other employees as well. Some were tears of joy and there were also tears that conveyed there is a lot that is “right” about the two women, our organization, and our country.

You see, comparing the two women—they could not be more different in their backgrounds. Cynthia is all-American and has grown up in the traditional American way. Yuni is a Chinese immigrant who still has difficulty speaking proper English.

Yet it was their similarities, which struck a chord with the rest of the staff. Those similarities caused me to speak about them, and those similarities brought tears filled with emotion.

Both women work in our accounting departments—Cynthia is in charge of the payroll department, and Yuni oversees all receivables and bank deposits. I have never had to ask either of them to stay late; however, they do not leave until their work is completed. I have never had to ask them to come in during a weekend holiday; however, they have been there to make sure nothing is left undone. They give their all to their duties even though they both have families of their own—Yuni has a son that she sent to medical school, and Cynthia has a son that she recently went to Iowa to watch participate in a cycle race. Cynthia takes care of payroll for six states, and Yuni takes care of accounts for the same number of banks. Neither their manager, employees from other offices, employees from the banks that we deal with, nor I have heard a complaint about either of these women. On the contrary, numerous employees have mentioned to their manager and to me about how helpful and kind they are…going out of their way, doing more than is required. Their common attributes are selflessness and doing what is right for others and for the company that employs them. They want to see the company grow. They want to see their colleagues grow.

they did what was needed for the country, their work place, and their fellow citizens The last time we experienced these attributes on a national scale was during World War II when millions of Americans were selflessly working and doing what was right for the country and for their fellow citizens. That period is often referred to as the “golden age.” It was during that time when Americans did not think about what others, their company, or their country was doing for them…instead they did what was needed for the country, their work place, and their fellow citizens.

Since that time, we have not seen that kind of prosperity in this country. During this most recent, difficult economic time, many people blamed the companies, their fellow citizens, and their country. If only they could learn from our two honored employees…Cynthia and Yuni…two women who carry the burden of a large company selflessly no matter what. If only they could learn from the “golden age.”

Will this nation have to worry about a depression? Maybe you should ask yourself.
