My parents passed away with dementia. Daddy first from Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s; my mother recently from a form of dementia that seemed less severe than Daddy’s: her gaze never disappeared and she knew me to the end. Neither smoked nor drank alcohol, only black coffee. My mother always loved taking a sip of my Dad’s at a restaurant, and he would say, “Dorothy, I can buy you your own cup of coffee.” And she would say, “I like it better drinking from your cup.”
In this summer’s Radius, out now, some startling suggestions that moderate alcohol use, caffeine use, and even smoking can lower the risk of Alzheimer’s dementia. Check it out, “Diet and Dementia: Is there a connection,” by Dr. Samuel Grief. A twist on what we’re used to hearing!
